I know what you mean. Of all the Brent years, 79 and 80 are my favorites, mostly because Jerry's voice hasn't totally fallen off and, you're right, Brent isn't quite sticking his overeager paws in every corner of the music yet. But even so, when I hear those fake bells tinkle man, I cringe. Gimme caterwauling and one drummer any day.

I know I know. The Toys R Us sound is dreadful. I like the organ, though, and don't mind Croaky Jerry. As his voice ages, there are times when it even adds depth and poignancy. Particularly later. Those plastic tinkle-bell sounds, though ... seriously, I enjoy a lot from the Brent era and can "listen through" them, but an occasional off-key Donna howl is preferable to Brent on a long tinky-wink kick.
